Exercise Can Lengthen Life After Colon Cancer
8/22/2012
Two clinical trials have shown that colon cancer survivors who exercise extend their life span beyond those who don’t. A multitude of studies have also shown a reduced risk of cancer returning when the patient is pursuing a physically active lifestyle.
Here are a few tips to strengthen your colon and overall health post-cancer:
- Don’t take on a sedentary lifestyle. Start exercising as soon as you can to boost recovery and increase your energy level.
- Physical activity can be helpful for fighting depression, tiredness and stress post-cancer.
- Incorporate both cardio and weight training. A balance of both is key for cancer survivors looking to achieve full body health.
- Start small. Don’t feel the need to over-do a workout or push beyond your body’s limits. The more realistic your goals are, the more likely you’ll be to achieve and build upon them long-term.
Since exercise increases gastrointestinal circulation, the colon is then more likely to function at its best. However, you should make sure to receive a full physical from your physician before starting any type of challenging exercise program. Always consult with your physician first for the best post-cancer direction and treatment.
